Katerina-Despoina Zacharis (Project Team Leader)
I have a spirited interest in Biology since I first leaned forwards in a microscope looking for stomata in a tomato leaf in my first grade High School; a brand-new, fascinating world uncovered in my eyes. It was then an easy task to switch from my child dream to become a fashion designer into evolve myself in a dedicated Research Scientist, therefore totally devoting myself to endeavor for the ultimate goal of my life, to serve Humanity with Scientific Breakthroughs and Discoveries in Molecular Biology and Genomics field.
Ever since, I try to built confidence and to develop the appropriate aptitude for this challenging discipline in the upper most level, a PhD. It was all clear to me, even back 2-3 years, what to study and at what level. Consequently, I have aimed at preparing a meaningful plan to realize my crystal-clear vision; I have chosen to follow an IB Diploma programme and to study in UK where there isn’t support for the undecided students.
Moreover, I have enrolled in various online courses in Biology and Chemistry (having already acquired two Honor Code Certificates at MITx: 7.00x Introduction to Biology – The Secret of Life by MIT Professor Eric S. Lander and MITx: 3.091X Introduction to Solid State Chemistry by MIT Professor Michael Cima).
Furthermore, I have attended last summer two Internships, one in the University of Athens -Biology Department and the second at the Biomedical Research Institute of the Academy of Athens. In both places, I have done many experiments including ones in the latter on neuron-like cells; I followed protocols for Western Blot Analysis, ELISA and Immunocytochemistry Analysis. It has been an honour for me to work with some of the best Research Scientists in my country in the finest working environment I ever been, having the greatest experience in my life.
In regards to the accomplishments that I am proud of, I would mention the conception and the ongoing implementation of CAS project “Bring Researcher in the Center”, this site that you are visiting.
I speak French besides Greek and English (and the IT language in some extent). My other passion is Dance where I can show self expression, control and discipline that further releases me from the down-to-the-earth matters allowing myself this pleasure once a week.
I do that not as an compulsion but because my unrivaled passion is Science and more specifically Biology, nothing else. I trust I will have the chance to realize my ambitions in a Top University.
